Since 1917, International Fellowships have been available to support women in pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral studies in the United States. These fellowships are specifically designed for non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents who plan to return to their home countries to pursue professional careers. Although the number of awards for studying outside the U.S. is limited, women who are members of Graduate Women International and not from their home country are eligible to apply (please refer to the list of GWI affiliates). The program encompasses both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited institutions in the United States.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree equivalent to that of the United States by the application deadline. Additionally, they should have already applied to their desired institutions of study at the time of application. Successful recipients are chosen based on their academic achievements and demonstrated dedication to empowering women and girls.

Upon completion of their studies, recipients are expected to return to their home countries and assume leadership roles in various sectors such as business, government, academia, community activism, the arts, or scientific fields.

Applicants must fulfill the following criteria in order to qualify for AAU International Fellowships for Graduate and Postgraduate Students.

  • Citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possession of a non-immigrant visa required for eligibility (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and dual citizens with the U.S. and another country are not eligible)
  • Must hold an academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree by November 15, 2022
  • Commitment to full-time engagement in the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year
  • Intention to return to home country for professional career after completion of studies
  • Proficiency in English demonstrated through required components (English proficiency exams, transcripts from English-speaking institutions, or a native language verification)
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must have applied to an accredited U.S. institution by November 15, 2023 (acceptance not required at the time of application)
  • Master’s/first professional degree fellowships applicable to specific programs (J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., medical degrees, etc.), while certificates, associate degrees, and undergraduate degrees are ineligible
  • Doctoral fellowships applicable to research degrees (Ph.D., Ed.D.)
  • Postdoctoral applicants must hold a research doctorate degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., D.M.) or an M.F.A. by November 15, 2023, and specify the research location
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited institution located in the U.S. during the fellowship year
  • Limited number of awards available for Graduate Women International members studying or researching in countries other than their own (foreign branches of U.S. institutions not considered within the U.S.)
  • Fellowship application open for full year of study or research, no partial year or programs ending prior to April of the fellowship year eligible.

Recipients of the AAU International Fellowships for Graduate and Postgraduate Students will be granted the following financial support:

  • For Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000
  • For Doctoral degree: $25,000
  • For Postdoctoral studies: $50,000

The panel convenes annually to evaluate funding applications. Grants are allocated based on the criteria specified here. The panel’s recommendations are subject to final approval by AAUW. Fellowships are granted competitively, taking into account the available funds for a given fiscal year.

To ensure an equitable review process, AAUW refrains from commenting on the discussions of its award panels. AAUW does not offer evaluations of individual applications. There are no provisions for reconsidering fellowship proposals. Once submitted, applications and accompanying documents become the exclusive property of AAUW and will not be returned or retained for future consideration.

  • Applicants who are residents of their home country at the time of application, hail from developing/emerging countries, or belong to underrepresented groups in any region will be given special consideration.
  • Policy on return to the home country.
